Hertfordshire Chamber and the IoD provide useful insight at a time of uncertainty in the Economic Outlook event for 2019
At the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce’s joint Economic Outlook event with the Institute of Directors (IoD), Hertfordshire region, held on Thursday 14th March at the Spotlight Theatre, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire businesses gathered for an informative and insightful look at the current state of the economy, how best to prepare for the impact of Brexit and a forecast for future prosperity.
A large theme of the event understandably was Brexit; given the recent vote against a no-deal leave. The on-going uncertainty is causing nervousness in the business community, but the general consensus from speakers was the need to remain calm. The current indecision makes it difficult to plan, although it is probably easier for large companies to prepare for different scenarios and to stockpile goods.
Chaired by Mark Mills-Bishop, Leader, Broxbourne Borough Council, who commented: “Hertfordshire is a county of opportunity and pro-growth; we in Broxbourne fully support the growth agenda and through our initiatives encourage businesses to thrive and strive. The economic future is positive and bright, the challenge now is to make it happen.”
Delegates also heard from a panel of speakers including: Charles Walker OBE, MP for Broxbourne; Neville Reyner, CBE, DL, Chairman, Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce; Allie Renison, Head of Europe and Trade Policy, IoD; Malcolm Evely, Head of Mechanical Engineering and Products, Space Systems, Airbus Defence; Darren Jordan, Partner, Kingston Smith; and Neil Hayes, Executive Director, Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
Briege Leahy, new Chief Executive of Hertfordshire Chamber commented: “Change always creates opportunities and Brexit is no different, so businesses need to make the most of the challenges and chances ahead.”
Lumina Technologies Richard McBarnet and Chair of the IoD Hertfordshire said: “Hertfordshire provides such a vibrant and growth driven environment for business and it is always rewarding and stimulating to rub shoulders with other like-minded businesses.”
