Background
Nestled in North Hertfordshire, The Chocolatier is a luxury artisan chocolate business making fine chocolates with sustainable cocoa.
At the heart of the company is Aneesh, whose background in science and deep passion for chocolate inspire a unique approach to flavour. The business supplies to Royalty, The Houses of Parliament, Michelin-starred restaurants, Luxury Hotels, and some of the finest stores in the world.
The Chocolatier’s mission is “to change the world one chocolate at a time”, and this is what drives Aneesh and the business daily.
The Challenge
Trading since 2011, with a workforce of 13 employees, the business faced several challenges typical of a growing company: recruitment, leadership development, and navigating complex HR conversations. While the team was strong and the culture positive, there was a sense that something wasn’t quite right.
The business recognised the need to improve leadership skills in order to grow and better support the team. They also wanted to become a more empowered employer, particularly in areas like disability inclusion and employee wellbeing.
The Solution
Aneesh first contacted the Growth Hub in June 2023 to enquire about funding opportunities, as he was planning to relocate his business from Bedfordshire to Hertfordshire. He was initially supported by our Business Information Adviser, who helped identify available grant funding. Recognising the business’s growth aspirations, the adviser then connected Aneesh with one of the Growth Hub’s Growth Account Managers for more in-depth support and strategic growth advice.
From there, the business was connected to a wide range of resources and programmes:
Over the past two years Aneesh has engaged in both one to one support from his Growth Account Manager as well as attending a number of our expert led workshops including:
- Maximising Funding Opportunities for Your Business’s Growth - a workshop designed to equip business leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the complexities of business finance
- Recruitment and Retention: Best practice for hiring and retaining talented employees - a regular fixture in the Growth Hubs workshop programme designed to help business leaders explore strategies for attracting and keeping top talent.
- Everyone Leads –Empower your Team, empower your Business's Future a workshop to aid business leaders in enhancing their leadership skills. These workshops helped Aneesh to reshape his approach to leadership and people management.
As part of the in-depth and ongoing support that Aneesh received from his Growth Account Manager, he was introduced to a specialist and fully funded business support programme to assist in his aspirations of becoming an inclusive employer - including a referral to the Herts Healthy Workplace Programme and to Step2Skills regarding becoming a Disability Confident Employer.
- Future Needs: The founder expressed interest in finance-related workshops, particularly around cash flow forecasting and projections—highlighting a gap even for those confident with numbers.
The Impact
The support has had a profound impact on both the business and its leader, with:
Improved Workplace Morale - Aneesh has shared that the workplace now feels ‘happier and lighter’
Enhanced leadership confidence - As a business leader, Aneesh says the biggest shift has been in mindset. He now feels empowered, in control, and equipped to lead with greater confidence and clarity. This mindset transformation has resulted in increased resilience and strategic thinking.
The approach to People Management has permanently changed, with improved communication and a deeper understanding of leadership’s many dimensions. The founder noted that even confident leaders can benefit from structured development, and the Growth Hub helped unlock that potential.
