The challenge

With an ageing workforce Peak Production Ltd are always looking for young people with a genuine interest in electronics and who want to build a career in the electronics field, either as a practical prototype wiring technician or as an electronics engineer. To ensure that they secure their future customers, they have a constant need for high calibre, enthusiastic young people, who are eager to build a career in electronics engineering / manufacturing.

Peak Production Ltd also want to be in a position to offer progression routes for existing staff, to provide them with the technical skills to progress in their career and within the organisation.

Peak have always been a huge supporter of apprenticeships with one of their Directors starting as an apprentice. In recent years, the business has struggled to find candidates and the right training provision for their industry. The client expressed the difficulties they face with finding apprenticeship provision for their staff.

The solution

Caroline Cartwright, Skills Specialist at Hertfordshire Growth Hub, met the MD of Peak. Caroline worked with the client to identify training needs within the business and also talked through the apprenticeship reforms and the progression routes available in the engineering sector right through to Degree level at the University.

From the Training Needs Analysis it was established that Bedford College, who deliver the Mechanical Engineering qualifications, were the most appropriate apprenticeship provider for the employer and employees due to location.

The impact

As an outcome of engaging with The Skills Brokerage Service an existing employee has commenced a L3 Diploma and a new recruit has started a L4 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. As Peak had not recruited an apprentice in the last 12 months, they were also able to access 2 x £1500 Apprentice Incentive Grants available via The Skills Brokerage Service. Further to this Peak are also in discussions with the University of Hertfordshire to enable progression on their Degree Apprenticeship in Engineering.
