The challenge

The Stickleback Fish Company is an ambitious family business built on a long heritage of fishmongering. Founded in 2006, the company supplies hotels, restaurants and education establishments. They’ve grown dramatically in recent years and want to continue, winning new corporate contracts while retaining the strengths that have brought them this far.

Stickleback knew they needed to make some cultural changes to keep growing, making sure they had the agility, presence and skills to compete with national companies. They approached the Growth Hub for support in filling specific skills gaps, managing performance, raising brand awareness and exploring a new home delivery service.

The solution

One of the key roles the company wanted to fill was an HR expert. As their diverse team rapidly expanded, they lacked the HR resource to manage it. Our skills adviser Caroline Cartwright has helped them develop job specifications for this, as well as sales, warehouse and driving roles, and find specialist recruiters for each position.

Stickleback have also been working with our sales and marketing adviser Chris Ellis. Together, they’ve held a brand review to help refine their proposition, engage the local community and raise brand awareness – all of which will help them win the staff, and new business, they need to grow.

Chris has begun helping Stickleback to commission customer research, which will support their brand work and help them establish demand for a new delivery service.

Stickleback have also benefited from the Growth Hub’s events, designed to get businesses thinking differently about what they do and help them make things happen.

The impact

Since Stickleback began working with the Growth Hub they have:

  • Taken on eight new team members
  • Achieved 37% sales growth
  • Held a successful brand review
  • Defined job specifications central to their growth plans
  • Enrolled staff on the government-funded Skills Support for the Workforce initiative
