The challenge

SWR Group was established in 1989, the company operates across four divisions; steel wire rope, steel balustrade systems, garage door spare parts and also install a range of home improvement products that includes garage doors, awnings, pergolas, bi-fold doors and entrance doors. They’ve grown their workforce by 20% in the last year and have ambitious plans to double their turnover in the next five years. With new business plans established last year, they contacted the Growth Hub for support in developing their staff by investing in qualifications and improving workplace skills.

The solution

SWR worked with our specialist skills and HR adviser Caroline Cartwright, who began by carrying out a business review to identify the key areas to help develop and grow their workforce.

The company knew they needed to develop skills in areas such as communication, leadership, decision-making, creative thinking and commercial awareness. Caroline worked with SWR to review management development solutions using the ILM framework and identified potential funding for workplace training.

SWR already had an Investor in People (IiP) oriented culture but were keen to achieve the accreditation to reflect this. Caroline carried out a benchmarking exercise against the standard and is working alongside an organisation that delivers IiP to review the costing to obtain accreditation.

To support their growth plans, SWR intends to significantly increase its workforce. Keen to engage with young people to help build their future talent pipeline, Caroline has facilitated meetings with organisations that work with young people and training providers to help the company engage with schools, apprentices and graduates.

The impact

Since SWR Group began working with the Growth Hub they have:

• Reviewed management development solutions
• Created an internal framework to develop young people in the business
• Reviewed practices to prepare for IiP accreditation
• Begun building relationships with training providers, schools and a university
