The challenge

Culverhouse Gardens is a family business specialising in garden maintenance and landscaping. Founded in 2008, they’ve grown quickly thanks to customer recommendations.

To meet increased demand, director Andrew Culverhouse wanted to expand and run two landscaping teams, but this meant hiring equipment on a regular basis – wasting time and money. The sensible choice was to buy the equipment, which meant finding finance.

The solution

In July 2015, Andrew approached a major bank to ask about business loans. The bank knew Culverhouse Gardens could be eligible for funding and recommended Hertfordshire Growth Hub.

Andrew began working with the Growth Hub’s finance specialist, Martin Carr. After exploring what they wanted to achieve, Martin advised on funding options and identified a source that could meet their needs – the Low Carbon Innovation Fund. Andrew got all the support he needed to make his application and, within a couple of months, the funding he needed was ready to use.

The impact

Since Culverhouse Gardens started working with the Growth Hub they have:

  • Successfully tapped into the funding they needed
  • Been able to buy even more equipment than they'd hoped
  • Grown their team by taking on four new members of staff
  • Improved efficiency, reducing downtime and wasted resources
  • Increased capacity, completing more projects, more quickly

“Thanks to the funding we’ve not only been able to buy the essential equipment we needed, but also some major wish-list items like our new mini digger. It was something we never thought we could stretch to. Getting the funding meant we could.”
