The challenge

Andrena Furniture is a solid oak furniture manufacturer. Founded in 1973, this ambitious third generation family business employs staff across three departments; Mill, Assembly and Finishing. With strong projections for year on year growth they knew they needed to increase their workforce with skilled staff to keep growing. They were referred to the Growth Hub for support in filling specific skills gaps, increasing margins and improving productivity.

The solution

A key requirement for the business was to recruit an office manager – freeing up time for the directors to focus on business development which was a key priority. Our specialist skills and HR adviser, Caroline Cartwright, helped them develop a job description and introduced them to key contacts at their local college to help fill the position.

Andrena has also benefitted from the Growth Hub’s events which helped to stimulate ideas about how they could increase productivity. As a result of this, Andrena took the decision to rationalise their product range to increase profit margins.

To help the company access skilled staff, Caroline suggested Andrena attends the FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) skills conference to help address the issues around the lack of skills provision in the industry. Since the conference, Caroline put Andrena in touch with a national training provider who specialise in apprenticeships in wood and timber – they are now working together to progress with the recruitment of further apprentices.

The impact

Since Andrena Furniture started working with the Growth Hub they have:

  • Reviewed their operations to increase productivity
  • Recruited three new staff to support their manufacturing operations
  • Built a relationship with a national training provider specialising in wood and timber apprenticeships
  • Implemented new processes to reduce wastage
  • Taken on an office manager to allow for business development
